    C2 POA Valve

I'm on the tail end of my 67 a/c coupe restoration. Have found out the POA valve is bad and understand rebuilding is not an option. Also replacements aren't available in reproduction. So I'm looking for direction on nos or somebody that might have any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Mark

It depends what you're looking for. If you want an exact original configuration POA valve, then NOS or good used are the only routes. I have absolutely NO idea where you'd find one for sale. However, if what you're after is just a functional valve which differs in configuration from the original, then your task may be easier. The last available Delco/GM SERVICE valve is discontinued. However, I believe that Dr. Rebuild still has some available. It will bolt right in and work perfectly.

Believe me, a FUNCTIONING A/C system with an incorrect valve, if you have A/C, is a whole lot more desirable than a non-functioning system with a correct valve.

      Re: C2 POA Valve

      Hi Mark:

I'm still chasing a problem with my 67 A/C, and the POA valve is a likely suspect. I have been looking into my options and can share a few thoughts:

      1) First, are you certain the POA valve is bad? How was that conclusion reached? Even if you think it's bad, don't throw it away. It may be possible to rebuild it some day.

      2) The 67 Corvette POA valve is unusual in that the fittings for the oil drain and the expansion valve exit the POA valve at a different angle than most GM POA valves. I think the Pontiac GTO and a few others used the same valve as the Corvette. I believe the correct part number is GM 5910593.

      3) Old Air products (http://www.oldairproducts.com) sometimes has NOS valves available, but I think the going rate is $600.

      4) I talked to a guy at Carlisle who said he knows of someone in Florida who can rebuild POA valves. He promised to get me the contact info but I have not heard from him. I can try to chase that down if you like.

      5) There is a fellow who frequently sells used POA valves on ebay, under the name pacecarjeff. Typical buy-it-now price is about $150. He claims his used valves are tested, but I do not know how he tests them.

      6) If you don't mind taking a hit on originality, there is a popular kit that replaces the POA valve with a simplified arrangement that regulates evaporator pressure by cycling the compressor on and off (the original design runs the compressor full time). I have seen this kit advertised on ebay, and I often see it installed on C2 A/C cars.

I hope the above info is helpful. Let me know how things work out.

The link below is a really good forum for air conditioning. I started a thread a while back about corvette AC systems with STV valves, and there is a lot of info on this particular thread. Also do a search on "POA" in this forum and you will learn everything there is to know. You will also run across how to actually rebuilt the POA and test it. The guy who runs it is a genius with AC systems.

I think on the POA, he cuts or uncrimps the POA, and replaces the rubber O-ring inside. They will also show you how to adjust the POA for use with R134 instead of R12 and get very similar performance

            Re: C2 POA Valve

            Gentlemen,

I appreciate all of your knowledge and input. In talking to Classic Air in Tampa I find they do rebuild them by cutting the band, disassemble, media blast, oil, replace both O rings, and piston if necessary. The valve is then set up for freon choice and welded back together. I've also found the ebay guy who has one that I'll probably try.

            Again, thanks
            Mark
