    '63 Powerglide Transmission

Can anyone out there answer a rather simple question I have regarding my tranny?

I have located a small fluid leak at the point where the throttle value control lever & shaft enters the transmission. I note, via the shop manual, that there is an o-ring at this point which is probably the source of the leak. There is not a lot of room to work with therefore my question is - "Can the shaft be removed and the seal replaced with the transmission as is in the vehicle."

I can't get an answer from the local transmission shops so thought I would go through the NCRS.

GM #8526398 is discontinued. It was replaced by GM #6555088 which was, in turn, discontinued and replaced by GM #3093509. The latter part is still available and currently GM lists for $0.96/each. It comes in a package of 10 unless your dealer stocks it.

        Re: Powerglide O ring seal

I can not imagine a dealer moving 10 of these for Power Glides in 10 years, unless they fit something else. In fact I would guess they must have another application for them to still be in the GMSP system.

Powerglide might be the reason he got negative reaction from trans shops. The only shops familiar with them today would be the places that cater to drag race folks. Of course that may have changed too. I found some shims for mine locally as a shop that cut the PowerGlides up for race purposes. That was some years ago though and racing trends change fast.

          Terry-----

The GM #3093509 seal has MANY applications across all GM car lines. And you're correct; if it were a Powerglide-specific part, I'm sure that it would be long gone from the GM parts system. There are very few Powerglide parts which remain available from GM and many of those that do have other(and often more contemporary) applications.
