Fuel injection unit Vs engine production date?

    Question for the FI guru's:

I have a 62 FI car with the original engine however the FI unit was MIA, upon purchase from the original owner's x-wife (that's two sad stories).

I located an FI unit that (from the calculations I found from the archives on this site) was produced approximately in the second week of March 62 (serial #2087). The engine was produced the first week of April.

In judging and/or in fact, is this 2-3 week time span reasonable between the manufacture of the two units?

Thank you in advance for your help, Jon

Jon, Sounds like a reasonable marriage...

...to me, even a good one. Currently, FI SN's are not being judged to my knowledge. The originality of the tag itself usually gets some attention. The older repros were not very accurate but have improved considerably over the years. Best, Dennis

1962 original car / FI unit serial numbers

My guess is that 7360 FI plenum #2087 was originally installed on a '62 Corvette with a VIN ending between 5,500 and 6,100.

Re: 1962 original car / FI unit serial numbers

        Hi Jerry,

I must have a flaw in my calculation, as I had the unit being manufactured in the 8th month of production or March, which would have had a vin # between 7586 and 9116 (if the unit was installed the on a car in the same month it was produced).

My calculation is as follows, there were 13 months of 1962 production (from the beginning of August 61 to the end of August 62). I then devided the total production of FI cars by 13 months, resulting in 148 units per month( 1918/13=148 ). Since the unit was the 1086 unit produced, it would have been manufactured in the 8th month or March ( 1086/148=7.34).

        Are my assumptions flawed?

          I just dunno.

Jon, my estimate of the VIN range for that FI unit was based on a handmade chart I have of known factory injected '62 Corvettes which still have their original plenum data plates.

I was just giving you my opinion. I wasn't questioning your logic, and I certainly don't have any GM documentation squirreled away to back me up. I probably shouldn't have commented at all. I'm often full of beans anyway.

A special note to all the Do-It-Ur-Self block stampers on the CorvetteForum who have twisted panties right now: Please save your sermons on how you just stamped your block to please yourself and your cocker spaniel until tomorrow. I'm going to bed.

            Thnx for the insight

Jerry, your handmade chart is probably much more reliable than my back of the napkin 'did aliens' make my FI unit theories... Thank you for sharing
