Yes, those 4.88s were fun part of the time. A friend had a 4.88 rear in a '61 and while it would jump from a light like a rocket, it was a drag going anywhere, engine turning about 10,000 rpm and driving along at 25 mph, or at least it felt that way.
We went up the Great River Road to meet a couple of clubs at the end of a rally once, and took his '61 so we'd have room for my cooler in the trunk. (Picnic at rally's end.) We buzzed along about 45 mph while everything passed us. Made a lot of kids in VWs happy.
