I purchased a 1967 Corvette this August at Corvettes at Carlisle, PA. I knew there was a lot wrong with the car but there was an air of mystery about it that compelled me to buy it.
It turns out that the car was drag raced in the Tucson area (perhaps Beeline or Perryville) from 1967 til about 1975. I am hoping someone might recognize the car from my description or might know somebody who was into drag racing in Arizona in the late sixties or early seventies.
It started out as Sunfire yellow hardtop convertible with black interior (VIN 194677S116941). The car had a high-horse solid lifter engine. It was either an L-71 (435 3X2)- probably, L-89 (435hp aluminum heads 3X2)-unlikely or an L-88 - small chance, I can't be sure which one it was. The car had out the back exhaust and the only options I can tell for sure were transistor ignition, tinted windshield, hardtop, radio, and posi. Does that bring back any memories?
Sometime between 1967 and 1975 the car was wrecked in the front. Somebody then put on a 1966 big block a/c nose. The frame was also changed to a 1965 or 1966. The wreck may have damaged the frame horns but it couldn't have been too bad because the car still has the original windshield and side glass. The car was then painted Marina Blue and may have been campaigned like thain ARizona or Texas. It was sold at the Radford (VA) Auto Auction around 1975. The fellow who bought it then said it came with brass ball joints, the left front shock was unhooked and it had slicks on the back and four inch slicks on the front at the time of the sale. He also told me there were dash plaques from Tucson on the car and that it came with a bunch of time slips that indicated it was an NHRA class winner. He then told me he threw the timeslips away! I couldn't believe any car guy could trash a car's history like that.
I would really like to trace the car's history and possibly restore it to race trim. I currently own seven Corvettes and have done a couple of frame-off restorations by myself. I think it would be fun and interesting to make the car look and run like it did on the strip.
I sure hope you can help me out. Please feel free to call me collect if you wish.
Thanks for any interest you can give this.
