Does oil have a shelf life?

    Hello all:

While organizing the garage I discovered an unopened case of Quaker State oil. It's 10 years old. Can this still be used or should it go into the recycle tank at the dump?

    Thanks, Bill

No. It does not go bad on the shelf. After all, it spent a few million years in the ground before it got to your shelf.

But 10 year old oil may only be up to "SD" or so designation. I forget where current oil is - around "SJ" or so.

If he runs it in a 12 year old or older car, then there is no problem, right?

Bill, I once found 2 one-gallon cans of Quaker State 10-30 on the shelf. Thety were at least 10-12 years old. I used them both in my '67 with no problem.

It may be O.K. to use, but I would not put Quaker State in a car that I cared anything about. JMHO. Tom

I had a girlfriend that had a new Trans-Am and she got a new engine also. It took about 8-9 month's before Quaker State settled up though. The Pontiac dealer did the service work on her car and they defered the whole mess to Q.S. which really dragged thier feet. She was making payment's on the car the whole time.Pennzoil own's Q.S. now so I don't know how they would be to deal with.
