C-1 4 Spd. Rear Oil seal

Can anyone suggest a source for a rear oil seal for a '58 4-spd T10 ? The transmission seal surafce has a 21/32" depth and the oil seal I purchased from Corvette Central only had a thickness of 13/32", just a little over half.

    Thanks
    Dwight

    Dwight-----

57-63 BW T-10s and 63-70 Muncies use the same extension housing rear seal. This seal is currently known as GM #8673526. I don't know if this seal is the same configuration as the original seals since sealing technology has progressed in the last 50 years and some newer replacement seals are configured differently than the originals. However, I would be 100% confident in this seal to do the job. You can purchase one at a GM dealer for about 6 bucks, GM list.

GM does not now and never has manufactured parts like lip seals. These are supplied by outside suppliers like National Seal and CR Industries. Both of those are excellent brands. If the one that you have is identified as one of those brands, it may be exactly the same as the one you'd get from GM. In that case, I'd go ahead and use it. Believe me, National Seals (now a division of Federal Mogul) and CR Industries know how to make reliable seals. If you check the metal frame of the seal, you should see some sort of manufacturer's ID stamping. The CR part number for this seal is CR #15041.

      Dwight-----

Also, the National seals part number for the seal is 9613S. So, even if you do not find a manufacturer's ID, if the seal you have has either the number 9613S on it or the CR Industries number 15041, then you know that you have a quality seal that is correct for the application regardless of any configuration difference that it may have with the one you are replacing.

Joe, thanks for the response and information on the T10 extension housing rear seal. Unfortunately the rear oil seal was extremely difficult to remove and I had to resort to slide hammer, a chiesl, and a lot of patience versus a pry it out with a screw driver approach ---- Which means that not much remains to identify the original seal. All I can make out is a number stamped in the steel that looks like R10H 110 and in the elastomeric material S 1125, 5-12. The seal that was removed looks considerably more sophisticated than the replacement. In addition to the original seal being almost 2X the thickness it included a felt packing in addition to the rear elastomeric material. The only marking on the replacement seal from Corvette Central is -- P.I.88050A. Do you think it is a suitable replacement or should I make a call on the local GM dealer?
        Thanks

          Dwight-----

I don't recognize the markings on the new seal you have. I think I'd at least get a GM seal and see what it looks like. All you have to lose is 6 bucks, or so. Also, a parts store that can sell you a National or CR seal will likley be the same as GM.

Keep this in mind, though: sealing technology has changed a LOT. Some of the old seals DO look like they're a whole lot more "substantial" and "sophisticated" than the new seals. However, the new ones seal better. That's the main thing you want in a seal.
