    Bellhousing

Can someone id this bellhousing. It has casting #E 11 6 on pass side. The #'s may or may not have spaces between them. It is on my 1960 283 230 hp car. Thank you.

    Re: Bellhousing

About anyone will say is that it was cast May 11, 1956 or May 11, 1966 or May 11, 1976 or May 11, 1986.

You need the casting number instead of the date. The casting number will probably be a seven-digit number like 3733293 or 3899621 or 3872444 or whatever.

It would help to know if it is a cast iron open bottom or aluminum or what?

Mike thanks for your response. Its cast iron. It has an inspection cover on the bottom of it, is that what you mean by open bottom? The car is already up on the hoist and bagged for the winter, so it would be a real hassle to look for casting number now (have to wait for spring) If I find one of those three numbers you gave what would they tell me. By the way where would I look for the casting number. Thanks

The casting number on most of these cast iron bellhousings cannot be seen with the transmission installed in the car. The number is in one of the "cavities" which the transmission flange covers. However, if the bellhousing is, for sure, cast iron and the car is, for sure, a 1960, then you don't have the coirrect bellhousing. 1960 Corvettes used a sand-cast ALUMINUM bellhousing that was of similar configuration to the earlier cast iron bellhousings. The casting number is 3764591. This is just about the most difficult of ALL Corvette bellhousings to locate. It was used only for the 1960 model year on Corvettes and it's use on other Chevrolet cars was VERY limited. Functionally, the earlier (and, much more plentiful) cast iron units will work fine, though. That's probably why your car has one.
