    C1: Electronic Ignition

Has anyone upgraded their old Corvette with an electronic ignition system?

It was suggested to me that I get a Pertronix electronic ignition for my '59. I would consider this if I could keep the new components hidden, but I can't tell if this system can be integrated into the Corvette distributor. Apparently I wouldn't have to buy a new coil. Is it worth the trouble to not have to worry about the points?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know people that have done it and it appears OK. I like the idea of knowing that if the car has trouble with points or condenser on the road I can change them out inside of ten minutes and go on. Not so with the electronic set up.

      Dave -

I have had the Lectric Limited Breakerless SE in my '63 for well over a year now. I LOVE it! Starts right up, never misses a beat, no hesitation, you cannot tell it is installed, and NO MORE POINTS.

According to their ad on p. 23 of Driveline, it works on '58-'74.

I also have this system in my 60 fuelly. Works great and you can keep the points and condensor in a baggie in the trunk. It is not easy (nor possible) to change points on the road, or anywhere else, in 10 minutes if you have the shielding installed. So far this system has made four 10 - 12 hour jaunts on the interstate averaging nearly 80 with no problems.

If you are wanting stealth, go with the Breakerless SE. The Pertronix unit has an extra wire that is a dead give away. The Breakerless SE is completely concealed under the distributor cap. I've used both and they work great.
