Or, shorting out on the Radio shield covering the distributor. That will get it VERY hot!

Oops - missed the "pink" - thought he meant the solenoid energizing wire. If it's the pink wire from the coil (+) down to the "R" terminal on the solenoid, it will indeed fry if it shorts to ground anywhere inbetween, and will take a bunch of other stuff with it at the same time.- Top

The shield is grounded both through its support brackets and through the braid on the plug wires to the valve cover bolts where the braid terminals attach. Check for chafing through the harness wrap where the engine harness turns down behind the pass. side of the block and heads for the starter, and where the spring clamp holds the harness to the starter solenoid.- Top
