I would recommend using the shims, as-is. Baically, the shims represent the "importation" of more contemporary brake design to the older models. I think that they will make a positive difference in reducing squeal and brake noise.

I have squeal on my '66 brakes I'd like to get rid of. The pads on my car now do not have these shims. Do you think they can be purchased independent of the pads themselves?

The Viper is one of the few remaining production cars (other than the new Z06 and Ferrari/Porsche, etc.) that uses fixed calipers (Brembo); we had a lot of complaints about "brake squeak" on the early 90's cars, and the ultimate cure (which was incorporated on the production brake pads by Brembo and is still in effect on the new Viper) was to grind a 45* bevel at the ends of the pads. It works.

Beveling the edges will also prevent the ends from chipping off under extreme braking conditions, which could potentially damage the rotor.

Not that anyone does extreme braking in a C2 these days.
