1980 L82 Restore

I have a 1980 L82 model corvette that needs some work done to it. My biggest question is whether or not to rebuild the original engine or replace with a new engine. All parts on the vette are still original. I am hoping someone here has dealt with the same issue and can help.

I suggest you rebuild however if you replace SAVE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE

DEFINITELY rebuild it. The car will retain the most value and you won't run into the inevitable "little problems" with installing a non-original engine in the car. This is especially true for an engine like an 80 L-82 and in the world of "emissions compliance laws" (whether they affect you NOW, or not).

When the engine is rebuilt, you should be able to reuse most of the major internal components. If an overbore is required (and, it likley will be if the engine has significant miles on it) make sure that the absolute MINIMUM overbore is performed. This will be 0.020" for off-the-shelf pistons and rings. Most machinists want to do 0.030". You want 0.020".
