paint on rear sills, 70 Coupe

70 LT1 is finally in the paint shop. Took all the old paint off myself, what a job....whew. Learned a lot, and would do it again. Soon to be correct Laguna Gray.

On the two rear sills, behind the window, there is a "blackout" procedure, correct ? Does the black paint begin on that (I'll call it ) "ledge", the ledge would be where the actual sill plate sits upon. Or is it black inside the sill, underneath the ledge, and/or is the edge and ledge the car color ?

Sorry if I'm not using the correct nomenclature.

    Thanks for any helpful info.

    Mark,
There is a picture of the blackout for the rear vents, if that is what you are asking about, in the 1970-1972 TIM&JG (Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide). This is truly a case of a picture is worth a thousand words. If you are doing a restoration the appropriate TIM&JG is a handy book to have for more than that picture, even if I do say so myself.

      Terry,
Thanks for the reply. I've had the manual for years now. I know the picture you're talking about. I just couldn't make out exactly where the black began, etc.

Well, I can give it a try now that I understand what you are asking about.
The original mask was generally flat and had a rectangular holes the size of the grille openings. The edges of the hole were depressed so that they caught on the edge of the opening. Those depressed edges "grabbed" in the opening to locate the mask. So the body color was exposed over the rounded lip and down the edge just a little, maybe an eighth of an inch down, I would guess.
Sure would be nice if you could find an original paint 1968-1972 to look at. There are usually some Bowtie early C3s at the national convention and some regionals – there was one at the regional in Cincinnati. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an example at Waco. Another good reason to attend the meets.

Yeah, that yellow 72 Bowtie car in Cincy sure was a beauty, wasn't it?

In fact, maybe these will help....

In the first picture their is lots of yellow down in the hole. I can't tell if the black fell off and yellow being very easy to see is showing through but on a restoration I would cover the body color with black out.

              Patrick and Lyle,

Thanks for following up on my question. I really appreciate your help.
I think I got it now...I better, after your explanation and pics !!
I did look for some good examples at the NCRS tent at Carlisle this year, but cars were roped off, and I didn't want to bother anyone. Plus, I didn't see many C3's to compare it to.

Thanks again. Always appreciative of everyones helpful and professional attitude here.

                Lyle,

My "thought" is that the yellow down in the hole is either from a) poorly applied blackout after the yellow paint job, or b) yellow overspray from all the touch up my car had done in St. Louis before it left. Either is possible, but I'd have to look at the car closely to tell you which. These were just from my picture collection on my hard drive.
