    67 C2 Steering Box

How much of the steering box will be painted when its "possibly painted black" per the Judging manual?
Will the entire box and cover be painted and only the shafts be natural?

I received a deduct for some very small rust spots so I thought I'd correct that by painting the entire box black.......

    Steve,

That's an interesting question. There's a corvette used part yard in my area with over fifty original, C2 steering boxes. Every single one is totally painted black, as opposed to the natural finish called for in the JM. I left the one on my '67 natural, but personally believe they were originally painted black.

      Rob and Steve-----

I believe that all, or at the very least the vast majority, of mid-year steering boxes were originally painted black. They were painted after assembly and everything was painted with the exception of the pitman shaft and the worm shaft. These were somehow masked off during the painting operation. However, there may be some paint at the very end closest the steering box where the masking was ineffective in keeping out the paint.

Most later C3 boxes were painted, too. However, I believe that there may have been a few more un-painted in this era. Many SERVICE steering boxes, especially those available during the past 20 years have been unpainted out-of-the-box.

Mock good source for c-1 pump. just make sure you don't buy a tonowanda cast pump as the judges will pick up on the gussets common to tonowanda casting. mike

Joe. was the yellow daub of paint put on before it was painted or after?

            Hi Tony:

I have been told that the yellow daub of paint was applied to the bare casting as an indication that some sort of inspection or repair operation had been performed. If the box was painted black, the yellow daub should be under the black paint.

I'm simply repeating what I was told when I last had my car judged. I hope that some other members can confirm whether this is true.

I believe that's the case. For those boxes that were unpainted (as I mentioned, mostly in the 68+ period), the yellow mark is easily seen. For the cars with painted boxes (which includes most of them), the inspection mark is under the paint.

Thanks everyone for the response. I'll paint it black with no marks. I'll also copy these posts for documentation.
