A few weeks ago I asked for help in removing a layer of aftermarket spray dye on '63 dash pads. These factory red pads were dated "2 233". They had been dyed a dark red shade long ago. It appears that they were shot with an automotive spray gun while off the car. The dye was thick only on the top surfaces, but it was sprayed everywhere.
I received some excellent suggestions on this Discussion Board. I've tried most of those suggestions now. Unfortunately, I wasn't successful in removing just the dye.
The basic problem I encountered was the factory red coloring. It had been applied to the surface of the vinyl only. In other words, the vinyl was not red throughout. It was actually gray plastic with only a thin layer of red on the surface. Everything I tried that would remove the dark outer layer of dye would also soften and remove some of the factory red color too.
Maybe later dash pads were covered with vinyl that was colored throughout. If so, it would be relatively easy to remove aftermarket dye jobs. But for my early '63 pads, that just isn't going to happen.
