    63 Brake Drun Info Needed

Looking for info on original 63 front brake drums. Need the casting number for either standard or metallic brakes. If you think you have the original drums that your car was assembled with, we need your info. Please specify std or met, if you know for sure which the car was delivered with. Thanks...

    Michael,

Are the 63 and 64 drums the same? I have all 4 original drums on my 64, plus to NOS front replacement drums that I just installed.

    Thanks,

    James West

I believe they are. This research project is for all drum brake C2s - 1963 to 1965.

Does your '64 have base or J-65 Metallic Brakes?

What are the casting numbers of the original and replacement drums?

Are the replacement drums marked with the max diameter?

Is so, is it die stamped or molded into the casting?

        James,

I believe, at this point, that 63 and 64 are the same. (65 is most likely a slightly different design/casting)

Also, in addition to what Duke mentioned, are your replacement drums from the original box with part numbers and do the original and replacement drums have a second set of five smaller holes between the five stud holes? Thanks

I just replaced the original front drums on my SWC this summer. My car was equipped with Metallic facings and the P/N on the drum is: 3828671 there is also a W-3 opposite side of the rim. I can photo and send if you need.

Michael, I just pulled the left front drum. After some cleaning and some light brass brushing I can see the last four numbers, 8671. I can barely see the first three as 382. I have the base brakes with power. I sent you a photo.

Do any of the 671 front drums (from cars) have the letter "X" on the face near the stud holes?

An "X" is die stamped on the face of my original 671 drums - J-65 - March 19 production date from the dealer copy of the production order.

Thanks to those who responded on the "X" question.
Harry your NOS drum matches the ones I have in 63 boxes.
Tom and Duke your response matches my research on J65 drums also.
Would anyone care to guess why GM added the 2 extra holes on 63 front and rear drums for production and service parts?

Clem that is a good possibility.
Some have the letter "F" but the majority are "X".
