What idle speed should I use on a 1960 270 HP engine. I know that with the cam it has in it, that it should idle higher than a 230HP with hyd. lifters. My 270HP has solid lifters. I have to idle it at about 1200 RPM. Seems to run great at this idle.

Re: idle speed
I'm surprised you can achieve that low an idle speed with a 30-30 cam, Bob. My '63 340 with the less aggressive Duntov cam needs about 900 RPM. The general rule is to set the idle as low as possible consistent with acceptable idle quality. Also load up the electrical system (lights heater blower, etc.) to insure that the idle speed will carry the load. I figure about 1000 ought to be in the ball park for your shorter stroke Duntov-cammed 282/270, Don. Bob and I can probably get a little better idle quality at lower revs because we have vacuum advance systems.- Top

Re: idle speed
Don, You and I do not have the simple one carb. situation. Dual quads requires more time and patience. The 270 HP engines have the 097 cam which is very friendly regarding timing and carb. setup. My 57 with 270 HP will idle as low as 500 RPM, but I keep the idle around 800 RPM. If you do not feel comfortable adjusting one carb., I would suggest you get some "good" help with your dual quads.- Top
