    C2- Spare tire carrier

I am attempting to determine if my spare tire housing is an original. My February build 1963 Corvette spare tire housing contains the markings MFG 19154. It does not have any other part number, it does not have any holes drilled int the clearance projections and it does not have the 1 inch lip which was not added until after vehicle VIN 14000. I also examined a friends March build 196349,000 mile unrestored Corvette and found that his spare tire housing has the identical markings. The NCRS judging manual for 1963/1964 states that original housings do not have part numbers or manufacturer logos, I find it unusual that these two vehicles would have the same markings unless they are both in fact originals. Possibly there was a difference between the early 1963 tubs and the later tubs. My 1967 which has the 1 inch lip does not have the markings. Also the spare tire carrier has a similar marking (MFG 19146) located on the underside just behind the V. I found this marking on over 10 midyear Corvettes from 1963-1967s that I examined. The judging manuals do not mention anything about markings on this part. Any help clarifying this matter would be appreciated

    Gary,

This may not be much help but the tub that came with my early built 1963 has no markings or part #, no holes in the clearance projections but has the 1" lip in the front and onto the sides. The cover itself has the MFG and numbers 19154 in between the V strap like you mentioned. I can not verify if this is original to the car because of the 1" lip on the front tub.

From responsed I have received, it appears that the early tubs before VIN 14000 which do not have the 1 inch lip have the marking and that the later tubs with the added 1 inch lip do not have markings. Appreciate added info.

Gary, I have found the MFG + the numbers on all original tubs and covers from 63 to 67. I did a visual on my 63 small lip cover and tub to verify and I send you a few pic's of a late 63 to 67 tub and cover. I believe the JG to be incorrect in this area.

MFG is the supplier's identification - Molded Fiber Glass Corp., in Ashtabula, Ohio.
