Thanks for the advice guys, as suspected the left rear spindle has not seen any grease in 40 years. I had to remove the trailing arm, the spindle would not press out as shown in the service manual. Time for new bushings as well. The problem is that the bearings probably overheated, seizing on the race. Any ideas on how to get the spindle out without destroying the arm would be greatly appreciated. I hope the right side is a little more by the book.

I would sent the assembly to Bair's and ask them to salvage what they can, rebuild, & return. Might as well send the other side too while you are at it. They do a lot of the rebuilds for other shops.Bill Clupper #618 -

If by chance you're in S. California, I can recommend someone. He was able to save all the components of my trailing arm, despite the fact that smoke was pouring out of my rear wheel bearing.Comment

You need at least a ten ton press and maybe some heat. If the bearings overheated they may have to be cut out with a torch. This is probably best left to a pro with experience at this task.
Do both sides now as the other side is likely to go soon.

Looks as if I might have to send mine out. I live in Washington state. Can anyone help with the name and number of a good rebuilder.
