Big Block RH (outboard) Dust Shield Filler Tab

Anybody have a '65 or '66 car with this tab installed ? From an eBay posting of L36 / N03 car --3rd picture down, right side, to the right of the C60 expansion valve. Notice the spot welds on the tab that fills the indentation that was normally designed to clear the bracket of the battery box (if the battery was installed on the RH side, as in non-C60 cars and non-'65 L78's.

I may have asked a similar question in the past, but here is a fresh example, with picture, of this anomaly. There is no unique AIM part number for a RH outboard dust shield w/C60, and it seems to be found only on BB cars and L78's (my late 396 has it, but my early L76/C60 does not). Roger Gibson has an article in an old RESTORER that indicates he has seen them on 396 cars and a '66 L72 (ie. w/RH battery, and it did not interfere with the tray-to-frame bracket).

What's up with this mystery piece ?

Re: Big Block RH (outboard) Dust Shield Filler Tab

    Wayne,

It's genuine, and it'd function is to fill the otherwise large gap left by the absence of the RH battery box leg on AC cars, just as you suggested. There actually is a part number on it (3833xxx?) and it was first used for the 63 with A/C. It was also used on 65-and probablt at least the first three months of the 66 run of side exhaust cars. It was never listed in the side exhaust section of the AIM but it was in all five years of AIM's in C60..

I still have the original out of a 66, car # 5644, and the spot welded filler plate looks very similar to the one on the ebay car.

I think I have a scan of the (rusty) original that I have.

      Found The Pic's...

This is an original shield, next to an NOS shield for comparrison, of the welded "filler plate" for 63-67 A/C cars and supposedly all cars with side exhaust, 65 through early 66. The used shield is from a 425 HP 66 with side exhaust. The part number for this special shield is/was 3833398.
