    C3 sidepipes question

I am restoring a late build (July) 1968 Corvette 427/390 big block with a 4 speed. I bought the car with sidepipes and I know they are not original to the car or even the year. That said I love them...so here is the question I plan on showing the car once the frame off is complete if I decide to put on side pipes would that eliminate any chance at Top Flight'ing the car. What is the points reduction? Any guidance on this would be appreciated.

    Depends on your approach/objective...

In Flight Judging there are two considerations: the raw score and the final score. The difference is the raw score considers the car on a stand alone basis while the final score includes 'bonus' considerations such as milage driven credit for those who actually drive/use their Corvettes and drive them to a meet vs. hauling them. Only the raw score counts if your judging objective is to pursue top honors like the Mark of Excellence Award...

If judges detect the car is not a factory original 'piper' car, club rules call for a full deduction for the associated judging points for the exhaust system as we do not encourage owner/dealer modifications. There are 40 judging points associated with the exhaust system on a mid-year car and there are 4500 total points. So, you'd lose about 1% of the total score for owner inspired addition of the side exhaust option.

Top Flight awards are granted to those cars scoring 94% or better, so you've 'pitched' one out of six possible percentage point deductions on the side exhaust. Now, you could easily get that loss back by driving the car to/from the meet via the milage driven bonus. BUT, if your end objective is to gain the Mark of Excellence Award, the milage driven bonus doesn't apply and the yardstick raises from 94% to 97% meaning you've lost one third of your 'cushion' with the side exhaust.

Yes, it's possible to get Top Flight AND it's possible to get Mark of Excellence with a car having added side exhaust... But, for Mark of Excellence, just about everything else on the car has to be 'perfect' to make the grade.

      Re: Depends on your approach/objective...

I take that as good news...I got to have the side pipes...and want to one day obtain Top Flight status...I was concerned it would be ruled out simply due to the modification... That was exactly the type of guidance I was looking for, quick follow up if my exhaust manifolds are correct would I still lose all the points for exhaust? Would I be subject to point loss anywhere else for this modification?

        Tom,
Jack is correct,"full deduction for the associated points for the judging points for the exhaust system".Just as a car with base coat clear coat in the correct color as per trim tag will also get full paint deduction.

I should know this but...how many points associated to the paint?

The short answer is 85 originality points for color, and 45/40 originality/condition for material, application, and appearance.

If the body has also been altered to look like that of a sidepipe car, you'll also take a big deduction hit in Body Fiberglass, in addition to the total deduction for the exhaust system.
