    Stripped Threads

    All:

I have a headlight bucket for 1965 which is mounted and finished, but with stripped machine threads on the lower(with buckets in the open position) tabs for the cover screws. These are the 2 black phosphate, flat Phillips head screws.
The permanent fix would be to weld the holes shut with new aluminum, finish, drill/tap new holes. I am trying to come up with an easier way, AND continue to use the correct screws. Does anybody have any ideas. The main concern is to be able to remove the screws after the repair.

you could use threadcerts or heicoils I think the threadcerts do a better repair I think they are made by the same company Steve

No problem. First enlarge the hole by 50%. Then fill it with JB Weld leaving a nice blob on the back side for support. Use masking tape to control it until cured. Then just drill & tap.

Slide a U-nut over the end of the tab.

I think I used a J-nut or one of those flat sheetmetal nuts on the tabs of my 67 light bucket. I buttered it up with some JB weld first then installed the bezel and screw tight before it took a set, so that it would stay in position. But I don't remember black phosphate screws, I thought mine were chrome or SS. Maybe a 65 is different.

              Jerry:

It is possible that '65 might be different from '67, but I don't believe probable. My 1965 TIM&JG calls for black machine thread Phillips for the bottom 2 screws, and chrome or cad flathead Phillips sheetmetal screws for the sides.

ALL - Thanks for the Suggestions

My first thought was the U-nut idea, but I did not think that the screws were long enough.
I found 1 that was made-to-order, and it did the trick.

The other ideas were good too, but this was the fastest and easiest.
