63 gas tank stencil

I've just remover the gas tank from my '63 coupe. It appears to be original but seems to have a non-conforming gas tank stencil. According to the aftermarket company's it's nothing like what they are trying to sell. It is worn but here's what I get: Line 1: ARM _. Line 2: M _ _ _. Line 3: LONG TER(M or N) _ _. Line 4: 4813 _ _ 300. Line 5: 12 _ 62SK. All of this bordered with a thick line. Any ideas or similar experiences out there?

Larry,

Check Noland Adam's book. I think I have seen a photo of this. The first line is ARMCO the company that made the sheet metal the tank was formed from. If what you are seeing is the same as what I remember seeing this mark was placed on the steel before the tank was formed.

BTW: ARMCO is better known for developing the steel guardrail that used to be found (and sometimes still is found) beside expressways.

Larry, Your post is very interesting to me. I dropped my original tank 2 years ago and decided after some thought, to replace it with a Quanta/Anderson Logo etc tank. At the time, I was dissapointed that I could not find any markings (other than the logo), or stencil markings anywhere. This was a Northern Florida car all its life with not much rust, the tank was in not that bad of condition. I remember calling Quanta when ordering my Frame stencil and Chassis Markings Kit. I asked them, they honestly replied that while they would sell me a Stencil that would be NCRS correct...they themselves (of the one individual) had not seen a '63 tank stencil. He had on many of the other mid-years, but not a '63. I chose to not add the number....perhaps some others can be more definitive on this. I'm dropping the Body on next week, so while I might be too late, you can still add this if correct to do so. Cheers, Arne
