    U-joint and 1/2 shaft joints

What after market joint is recommended for drive shaft and haft shafts? Part and part number would be helpful.

    Thanks Ray

    Spicer

I used Spicer joints. I think the numbers are (this is from memory so they could be wrong) 625X for driveshaft and 627X for 1/2 shafts. These are numbers for joints with no zerks. Mike

Re: U-joint and 1/2 shaft joints

      Ray,

When I purchased ujoints for my half shafts I wanted to use heavy duty joints without grease fittings. The trunion on the spicer ujoint 627X will not fit between the yoke on corvette half shafts but it is a very heavy duty ujoint. I ended up with GM ujoints without grease fittings in a AC Delco box and I am told they are manufactured by Spicer. There part #'s are AC# 45U0123 and GM# 89029305 these are known as 1310 and 1350 series ujoints used for many applications and they fit with no problems. I'm sorry but I don't know the Spicer # for this ujoint but these are usually an ebay item for around $75. for four ujoints. I called my Chevy dealer but he thought I wanted to buy gold and his price is just over $100. each.

I purchased a set of Federal-Mogul PRECISION Brand non-grease-zerk u-joints part #231 for the 1/2 shafts. Made in USA. Perfect replacement. They are about $20 ea at Bumper to Bumper Auto Pro. NAPA also handled them.

Don't know if they had the driveshaft units but don't see why not.......

          Ray,

The u joints(no grease fittings) I got from Long Island did not fit in the original half shafts on my '67. As Tim mentioned, there was interference between the half shafts and the flanges, which were original to my car. They did fit in the drive shaft. Although they assured me they were tested and do fit, they didn't. I ended up using the black, precision u joints without grease fittings.

I had this same problem with the ones from LI. Glad it wasn't just my setup. I bought the Mogul ones locally and they fit fine.

Re: U-joint and 1/2 shaft joints

I ordered Percision brand u-joints yesterday from NAPA. My wife picked them up from the NAPA store so I did not get a chance to inspect them until today. They gave me the NAPA brand in stead of the Precision brand and on the side of the joint in big bold letters was the work "JAPAN". I am returning them for the Precision brand. I hope to be installing the engine and transmission in the next few days. When I removed the rear transmission mount form the package to inspect it I found one side of the mount did not have any rubber. I then noticed the label "MADE IN INDIA". This part was purchased from one of the Corvette part houses. How long before an Original 1963 Corvette that was made in the US will have more off shore parts that original 1963 GM parts and will we then call it a 1963 Corvette import?

                Sorry for rant!

I found the bill for my u-joints and they are 627X and work fine on my half shafts. Mike
