    C2 Side Pipes

I've been reading in the archieves a lot about the sound of Allens Sidepipes. Those posting that talk about it say they are not the same, but they don't go into much detail. I know it's a very subjective thing and one on one comparisons are hard to do, but can anyone with Allens pipes reply with their feelings good or bad. I'm thinking of purchasing a new set from them. THanks for the help.

    Re: C2 Side Pipes

I had a set of Allens on my '67 427/435 and they were too loud to pass the PV. I replaced them with a set of NOS pipes and passed the PV at the Lone Star regional. There was a very noticeable difference, especially at idle. The NOS pipes were much more pleasant to be around making a more pleasing rubble to my ears.

The main difference is that all repos that I know of right now are made with 2" baffles and the original were 1 1/2". I am sure you get better performance with the Allens but it makes it hard to have a conversation in the car.

      Bob,

I have a set of Allen pipes on my 66 Coupe. The car was not a pipe originaly. I changed it over from an under car exhaust. I am running a zz383 GM Stroker and Patriot headers. My pipes are stainless. I have no way to compare to stock pipes. These pipes are loud no question. Those who have had both original and Allens say that the Allens are louder than they recall their originals to be. I converted mine because I just like how the c2's look with pipes. I do not mind the loudness at all and I have been running them for two years now. I do set off car alarms when I get close to parked cars. Sometimes they just chirp and other times they go right off.

Thanks for the responses guys. This seems to be the general consensus. Loud, but nice. Maybe a little too loud. Thanks.

I do not mean to head off on a tangent but how do you tell if the sidepipes are original to the car?

          Thanks

            Gary -

There's detailed guidance on making that determination in Item #16 in the Exterior section of the '67 Judging Guide; in addition to that, if the "Body" number on the trim tag has an "A" prefix instead of an "S" prefix, the car wasn't "born" with sidepipes.
