    What is the difference between an L71

    and an L88, other then cost these days?

    A lot. The L71 is the 435 hp, iron head, tri power 11:1 compression engine.

    The L88 is the 430 hp, aluminum head, high rise, Holley, 12.5:1 compression engine.

    The first made about about 450 or so real horses with open headers. The second made about 550 or more real hp with open headers.

    Many interal parts differences.

    Rarity. About 210 L88s vs 9500 L71s, very rough numbers, but you get the picture.

      DIFFERENCES:

      Cylinder heads are different

      Valve springs are different

      Valve spring caps (retainers) are different

      Connecting rods are different

      Camshafts are different

      Intake manifolds are different

      Carburetion is different

      Pistons are different

      Crankshafts are different (usually)

      Distributors are different

      Rocker arms are different

      Head gaskets are different

      Intake gaskets are different

      Oil pump is different

      Flywheel is different

      Clutch is different

      Bellhousing is different

      Pushrods are different (1969)

      Piston rings are different

      Harmonic balancer is different

      SIMILARITIES

      Block is the same

      Lifters are the same

      Timing set (cam sprocket, crank sprocket and chain) is the same

      Valves are the same

      Front cover is the same

      Oil pan is the same

      All other gaskets besides head and intake are the same

      Bearings (cam, main, and rod) are the same

      Valve covers are the same (for any given year)

      Exhaust manifolds are the same
