    '74 fuel pump gasket

1974 350 L48. I am preparing to replace the 2 gaskets at the fuel pump mounting.

I started to do this last night and ended up with trickling fuel from the pump to carb line for about a 1/2 hour. At this point I realized it was late and I needed more info.

To remove the pump enough to change gaskets, should I disconnect all 3 lines from the pump? If so, how much fuel can I expect to have leak out? The contents of the pump? The contents of the fuel tank? I hope not. Is there some thing I should plug before doing this?

One thing I didn't like was that leaking fuel got all down inside a steering rod end.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    Re: '74 fuel pump gasket

The first thing is to clamp off the rubber line between the line from the tank and the pump, then disconnect the rubber line. The other lines will only drain what is in the line generally, so that can be caught in a pan and disposed of.
The line from the tank will drain the whole tank if not closed, and if you disconnect the pressure side lines only without closing off the tank side, it is possible to drain the tank thru the pump. There are special clamps to make this easy, but a dowell in the line after you disconnect it works too..

Here's what I use to clamp off the inlet hose; if you don't clamp or plug this hose, the entire contents of the tank WILL drain on the floor.

          Thanks for the help

I'll have to get some clamps ready to do this job. No wonder the gas kept coming!

          Thanks again for the advice,
