Re: 1963 1/2 shaft U-joint flange
Ray-----
1963 Corvettes used the thicker cross section half-shaft flanges. These were GM #3832048. These flanges are manufactured of nodular cast iron and are weaker than later flanges which are forged steel. For 1964 PRODUCTION, the flanges were revised to the forged steel design I mentioned and were known as GM #3843018. The 3832048 flanges were discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1966 when the inventory was exhausted and replaced for SERVICE by the 3843018. The 3843018 are completely interchageable with the earlier design and should require no other adjustments, of the trailing arm shims or anything else. The difference in thickness is accomodated other places in the design of the flange.
The 3843018 flanges were used in PRODUCTION through the 1974 model year. For 1975, they were replaced by the GM #360913. These also became the SERVICE flanges for all 63-74 Corvettes and are completely interchangeable with the earlier. They are of forged steel construction but have a slightly different configuration than the 3843018. Usually, the name of the manufacturer, Spicer, will be found embossed on these flanges. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
