Just what does black semi-gloss mean?

When I look at the descriptions in the JG for my '67 that read semi-gloss, does that mean today's satin finish or semi-gloss? I'm starting to redo my dash and other interior pieces, and I want to get it right.

    Tony-----

"Semi-gloss" is anything but a definitive term. For interior parts, in particular, I would seek out specialty interior paints that have been formulated for the right degree of gloss. For underhood and chassis, GM #1040105, GM-discontinued but now reproduced, is about the right gloss for most "semi-gloss" applications. Unfortunately, just as it was when it was GM-available, this paint is only sold in gallon cans. I would not use it for interior item, anyway, though.

      Tony,
Semi Gloss is usually referred to GM # 1050104 which is a one gallon can that does not have to be mixed. This paint was utilized on various compoments of the vehicle whether the parts were dipped or sprayed. Keep in mind that if you change the last digit to a 5 instead of the 4, you will get a 5 gallon pail of this paint. Sometimes it is a little more glossier and sometimes it is a litle more flat. Whatever the shade is it is still acceptable. Call me if you require additional information.
      Regards,

                Loren,

                Who sells it?

I saw original GM gallons for sale at Carlisle, but most started at $100 and went up from there. That's a lot higher than the $35-40 previous to the discontinuation, especially when we're just talking about black paint.

Yes, I know the price of automotive exterior paint.

But cheap lowest-bidder black paint that GM used on everything? Somehow the $35 to now $100 per gallon jump seems more than a gallon of cheap black paint should cost, especially if someone supposedly came out with it in reproduction. But 4 quarts of semi-gloss Rustoleum (for example) and it's far less than $100. 1040105 can't be that much more "sophisticated."
