Hey guys - I have a big block camshaft that I am trying to identify. Since you guys seem to know everything, I'll start here first. It has 4066 or 4068 cast into it. Hard to tell. It also has a marking of GM5 on it. It also has 2 raised dimples and another raised "M". Whatever it is it has a pretty aggressive profile. The second one is not nearly as aggressive and has a GM4 marking with a casting number of 6144. My father bought this cam years ago and was told it was an L88 cam, but has no idea if it really was or wasn't. Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think that you'll find that the "4066" is actually either "4365" or "4366". Casting numbers are often vary difficult to differentiate. If the castin symbol is a lone "M" as you describe and not flanked on either side by an "O" , then the cam number is almost certainly "4365". In that case it a GM PART #3904365 camshaft. This camshaft was used for 396/402 265, 325, and 335 hp applications from 1967 onward and is a hydraulic lifter camshaft. Also, it will not have a rear journal, circumferential oiling groove.
The other cam ID number is probably "3144" and not "6144". This would be a GM PART #3863143 camshaft. This camshaft was used for 1965-66 SHP big block applications (375 and 425 hp) and is a mechanical lifter camshaft. Many of these cams have the casting symbol "OMO" in addition to the casting ID number. Not all have the "OMO", though. The 3863143 camshaft should have the rear cam journal circumferential oiling groove.
Neither cam is an L-88 camshaft. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Camshaft identification
Joe,
Thanks for the help. I guess I should have been more specific though. Both cams are solid lifter cams as I still have the lifters. The came out of 427's that my father bought for his drag car. All of the 427's he purchased were solid lifter rect port head, etc. Unfortunately he sold them all in the early 80's during a divorce real, real cheap. There is just various old bbc stuff he didn't sell with them that I am going through right now. Anyway, on the second cam - you are right on. It does have the oiling groove as well. The first came is a solid lifter cam as well, but has quite a bit more lift than the second. Enough where it is visibly noticable. I will take some pics this weekend and put them up Monday. Hopefully that will help. Thanks much for the help.- Top
