"Raising" pad numbers from decked blocks??

There was an article some years back covering a chemical process for making decked engine pad numbers appear. The idea was to make the compressed metal where the original numbers were stamped, to become legible - at least for a short time. I cannot find this article and it is not on our CD's.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction??

When I was a forensic science major in college we used a product called Fryes Re-agent. We applied it with a rag and rubbed the area until a shadow appeared where the nembers had been ground off.

As Hen mentioned, the numbers don't "raise, but a similar approach requires heating the stamped area of the block until glowing with an acteylene torch, and a"shadow" of the original stamp will appear when cool.
