C-1 Corvette Steering Wheels

Hello. Just a few questions about '56-'62 Corvette Steering Wheels and how they are judged for NCRS... I restore C-1 steering wheels for a hobby (for the last 5 years) and have had many people ask how my work will rate for ncrs. I know that original wheels were textured, however, I can not and do not texture the wheels I "restore". Rather, the wheels are painted in the correct color for the desired interior color (using lacquer PPG paint) and then clear coated, wet sanded, and polished. The wheels turn out as smooth as glass and high gloss. Is this acceptable for ncrs or will lots points be taken off? Can any one help me out here? I know there are books out their that might cover my question, but I don't have those, nor am I about to spend the high dollars on them... THANKS in advance!

restored wheels should have a texture to them as that's what they had when they were attached to the steering col shaft as the car was being born. NCRS judges look for texture and deduct if absent. i'd guess anywhere from 25 to 50% of points allowed would be an appropriate deduction. Other steering wheel restoreds have developed a method to bring back texture. good luck in your persuit of the texturing proceedure.mike
