    A.I.R. Pump

I have an A.I.R. pump with a casting number 7817872 and a date code that looks like 165. Does anybody know if this is a corvette pump, and if so what year?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Mike----

First off, by "casting number" I assume that you are referring to the casting number found on the cast iron backing plate of the pump. Usually, there is no casting number on the aluminum body of the pump.

Most 69-71 Corvettes use a 17 cc pump of several different PART numbers including, but not limited to, GM #7803947 and 7806686. These pumps usually have cast iron backing plates with the casting number 7801149 on them. A "julian" date code can be found on the aluminum pump body on the machined surface of one of the casting bosses. This date code is usually a 4 digit number ending with the last digit of the year of manufacture.

1972-82 Corvettes use a 19 cc pump of GM PART numbers including, but not limited to, 7817809, 7831337, and 7832118. I do not know, at the moment, the casting number found on the cast iron rear plate of these pumps. However, I suspect that what you have is a 7817809 pump which was used on 1972-78 Corvettes.

I should also point out that NONE of these pumps were unique to Corvettes. They were all used on a VAST ARRAY of other GM cars and there is no way to tell what the original application was of any such pump. In fact, the GM #7817809 pump was one of the most common and is still available from GM for a list price of $276.27

I was told there is a way to tell by the suffix. Going from memory S=Chevery R=Buick
