What is up with this clutch spring? It looks like a hood hinge spring off one of my chevelles! I don't see the need for this brute of a spring, not to mention I can't figure out how to get the damn thing back in place. I put a new clutch in this car and it feels just fine the way it is. Any thoughts. This is not a resto but a driver.

Re: Clutch helper spring on 60 vette?
Welcome to the world of the over-center spring, including the silly adjustment where it bolts to the cross-shaft bracket that is supposed to be functional; rumor has it that this piece was designed by Attila the Hun in a moment of extreme frustration. Essentially, it is unnecessary, and realistically, either installing or removing it is generally considered life-threatening. It is particularly useless if you have a diaphragm clutch, as it can contribute to the dreaded "clutch stuck on the floor at high rpm" syndrome. I removed mine, hid it where I hope I can never find it again, and fabricated a bracket that bolts to the same two holes on the cross shaft and uses a heavy-duty storm door spring between there and the little bracket on the frame - this works very nicely as a pedal pullback spring, and keeps the pedal up against the bumper; it even looks almost correct unless you look real closely (painted the bracket and spring flat black).

Hi Wally - What John says makes a lot of sense. I stayed with the heavy spring on my 62, but I also had the help of a young flat-belly from the 82nd Airborne! THEN I found an article in the Summer 87 Restorer by Joe Calcagno on this spring installation and a design for making a tool to do it. If there's a next time..... Good Luck, Dick- Top
