    63 pulley alignment revisited

63_327 SHP with added power steering

As a result of on-the-mark advice from an earlier post, I now have the 3858533 crank pulley which lines up perfectly with the PS pump pulley. Now, about the belt: is there a spec for it so that I might find it at a parts store, or am I going to need to get it from a catalog?

Don't know if you can find a number, but you can wrap a piece of 1/2 nylon rope around everything and mark the length. Take it to your local parts jobber and let them find one for you.

Quanta, who advertise in the driveline, ought to have the belt you need.

None of this advice pertains to judging or what was actually produced. It is simply what the aftermarket catalogs suggest and what worked for me.

        If you're copying '65 L79 with belt on two pulleys only, use a 3/8 x 35" belt(Gates / Napa #7350 or Goodyear #15356) IF you use a '63 to '65E pump support bracket.

(Tangential question for the experts: Since L79 was a late intro engine and Power Steering an even later option after the oil pan changed, was this set-up ever really produced?)

        If you have a '65 (2'nd design)and later bracket, a 3/8 x 36" belt (Gates 7360, Goodyear 15366) is listed.

I have a later bracket but went with the shorter belt as I did not like the proximity to the frame with the long belt. Tougher to install but it works. Might be why they went to running a much longer belt around both the power steering and water pump in '66 (L79 only of course).
