C2:67 Tell me it ain't broke!

Well, I'm comparing my original 67 "Patent Pending" distributor cap with a generic replacement and I notice a real difference in the inside around the center post and pivot point for the rotor.

The original cap has just this thin band of aluminum around the pivot point, with 5 ridges and 5 depressions:

The generic has this wide band (about 1/8" wide) around the same pivot point:

The question is, did something break off or wear off the original, or was that the way the original is designed? If something broke off, is there any way to repair the original?

Nothing is wrong with respect to the center contact on the original cap. The manufacturing methods and resulting configuration are different. The Delco cap used the manufacturing technology and tooling as employed by the folks in Anderson, IN 30+ years ago. The aftermarket cap employs the manufacturing technology and tooling used by whatever company now manufactures these caps. It's as simple as that. The folks in Anderson, IN have ot manufactured these caps is well over 15 years. As far as I know, all of that tooling was scrapped.

      Thanks, Joe

I'm going to try her out this weekend and replate the door. Found that the original is much more finely detailed then the generic. The door comes off by bending one little tab, the generic is riveted on.

Now I've have a judging cap.
