    C2 Glass Installation

This Wednesday I am having the rear glass re installed in my 66 coupe due to a sloppy job before I bought the car. The installer wants to use a bead of urathane although I already bought the butyl tape, which I believe is the orginal way. However, the 66 maitenance manual does show laying a bead of the sealer in place of the butyl.

I belong to the NCRS and want my car to look original, however, I doubt it will be ever judged. The installer told me the bead of urathane will look original. What are some past experiences here? Can any offer anyone feedback? Thanks. Clark #42490

    Don,

If he is using the urathane that is used in modern auto windshield replacement then expect that it will provide very good sealing properties but also is a very strong bonding agent unlike the butyl tape. In modern cars the windshield is a structural member of the vehicle and the urathane is an important part of that. I can't tell you how it look.

in order to look original, the glass installer will have to maintain a bead of urethan that is equal to the original butyl in width and thickness. mike

Urethane will work fine - it's simply a more modern version of the "Thiokol" pumpable adhesive that was used originally.

I hope you're also using original type weatherstrip. The way your post reads I'm afraid you plan to just glue the glass in like later models are done.

            Wayne -

He's talking about the coupe REAR window, which was glued in place; only the windshield (and '63 SWC rear windows) were in rubber channels.
