    Removal of steering assembly

This weekend I got ambitious and tried to remove the power steering cylinder/valve on my 69. I couldn't get the ball joints or the cylinders loose. Do you have to have a ball joint tool or is there another way? I beat on the things pretty good without budging them. All help appreciated.

    I've always used a ball-joint tool.

You can carefully use a ball joint "pickle fork" to remove the p/s components as Bill suggests. However, a tie rod "pickle fork" usually works better than a ball joint "pickle fork" since it has a narrower spread between the forks.

Best of all is to use a "screw type" ball joint/ tie rod end seperator tool. This tool avoids any damage to the components and is usually very effective. They are manufactured by Kent-Moore, Old Forge, and others. They cost about $60 and are one of the tools that I wouldn't be without.
