C2:67 What a difference a little plating does

Working on my 67 distributor project and I thought I'd show what a difference a little plating will do to the vacuum advance.

    Here's the before:

    Here's after zinc plating:

    Same vacuum advance, honest.

Here it is on the distributor before:

    And here it is after:

Well, I finished my distributor project, changed the main shaft, and cleaned everything up. Piece of cake job, didn't realize how loose the main shaft was up and down. Shimmed it to about .006.

Here's the finished product with the "Patent Pending" cap.

The cap cleaned up well too, just buffed up the door, a little simple green followed by WD40. Thanks Jack.

    Having fun!

Yep, used my Caswell Copy Cad and Zinc setup. Cleaned up the vac advance, plated for a half hour, then buffed it out with a nylok wheel.

            Daub of green paint

Hey Jerry. I rebuilt my '67 distributor about a month ago on my survivor '67, and I had a green daub of paint on my distributor as well. I think my paint was a bit darker, but the same idea. Any idea what the daub of green paint was for?

Incidently, I also had a daub of green paint on the pass side of my powerglide transmission too.

              Tony,

As I understand from a previous post, the daub of paint was a factory identifying mark for the distributor so that they could easily identify the application. Mine is a 67 base engine, what's yours?

There were different colors for different applications.

Jerry, I thought it had something to do with the Irish. D/

                      Dale,

By the way, if you don't need your vacuum advance for a couple of weeks, you can send it to me.

                        Re: Daub of green paint

The daub of green paint was applied as a color-code visual assembly aid at Delco-Remy (instead of trying to read the tiny part number on the aluminum band and decoding it every ten seconds all day long) so the assembler knew which mainshaft/autocam and vacuum advance unit to install in the housing. The Delco distributor assembly drawings show a unique color daub on the housing for every different part number distributor.
