    Al Greening...Trim tag checker...

I recently heard tell of a device (sold by Al Greening?) for measuring midyear trim tags, as a method for checking authenticity. Can anyone elaborate on effectiveness, source, alternatives...?

Is there another source for a monoculor (broach buster like...)?

    Thanks

Also try closetoinfinity.com that sells a macroscope that may work for you. Call them and tell them your intended use, it may be less expensive.

Since all midyear trim tags were made on the same equipment, they have several distinguishing characteristics in common. One such characteristic is the size of the plate, which is uniform within very close tolerances.

Since most reproduction tags have slightly different dimensions, I believe that Al uses a simple measuring tool to quickly rule out tags that are not the correct size.

This is an easy way to eliminate a tag from further consideration, but I don't think it is a definitive test for an original tag. Any tag that has the correct dimensions must be further examined under magnification to confirm that it has the distinguishing characteristics in the stamped letters, as described in the trim tag verification book.

So, if your job is to check the trim tags on 50 cars at a big meet, a template that quickly identifies incorrect size plates can save you some time. However, if you are only going to look at a few trim tags, you can skip the screening step on the size and go directly to the visual inspection under magnification.

Did you get the book yet? You can get it from the NCRS book store. Very educational and a good read. Well worth the price

Haven't seen the book or the measuring device, but if the measuments for the tags are given in the book then you can get a cheap pair of dial calipers from any tool store that should provide measurments accurate to +/- .0001 of an inch.

                good luck,
                tc
