There is a nut plate there to hold the screws, so your threads must be stripped. I usually just insert a small piece of soft wire for the screw to tighten into.

Don't have any good ideas about how to hold the nut. It is supposed to be spotwelded to a reinforcement plate. You can remove the screw by drilling out. Purchase a mirror installation kit, which consists of two well-nuts and two screws. You can use this to reinstall your mirror.

1) Obtain a 8-24 thread size "thread sert";

2) Drill out the stripped hole using a drill the size specified with the "thread sert";

3) Install "thread sert";

4) done.

The thread size is 10-24 and NOT 8-24
