Can anyone tell me what color primer the factory used in 1967? Thanks, Mark

Re: What color primer did the factory use in '67?
Mark. I'm in the process of restoring my survivor '67 coupe. As I've been stripping the paint around the doors, I've noticed that the doors have a green primer. I'm not sure what it is, but it is definitely a green primer. I'm not sure if that is limited to just the doors or the rest of the car too. I'll watch for future responses.

I've got red primer (looks more like brown) showing through on my 67 in the hood area and on top of the fenders. Only got 20 off for the condition on the paint.

I am currently cleaning the firewall on my 65. Under 40 years of crud and then blackout, I found the original red paint overspray. Underneath the paint and directly on the fiberglass is red oxide primer, and as Jerry stated it appears more brown.- Top

Red body primer
Assuming that I uploaded the image of my '67 coupe correctly, you can see the remnants of the red primer from my car. I took this photo yesterday. The metal parts around the door have green primer. The body has original red primer.

I restored a 65 that had red oxide primer as the base primer coat and then a coat of gray primer as a guide coat. I believe the primer was sanded until the red started to show through. The Original Glen Green lacquer was over the gray primer.

Re: What color primer did the factory use in '67?
Ray,
I don't know for sure but I suspect the gray you are seeing was a sealer. If you don't seal the primer before shooting the color you may experience sand scratch sweeling and primer bleed through. My 64 was painted by the factory with the red oxide primer with the gray coat over it as you describe. The red oxide primer was very resistant to chemical stripping. I suspect it is a polyester product. I primed my car with Pacific Coast Lacquer polyester primer in the red oxide color (over the bare fiberglass). Then followed with Dupont epoxy sealer in the dark gray color, followed by my color coats (silver). That was close to 2 years ago and no problems yet (knock on wood).
