63-66 Repro Inside Mirror Support Question?

Gentlemen and the few Ladies Present including
Old Friends of Ancient Road Transportation

Has anyone had any problem with a 1963-1966 reproduction inside mirror support? I don't make this part. I thought this CMD part exceptional in quality, fit and faithfulness to the original GM parts. Has anyone ever had a problem with this repro?

    Geoffrey Coenen

PS I had one problem, but am befuddled as to what it entail??

Perhaps she had a repop mirror and/or yoke that was slightly undersize and the combination of the two caused the condition in question.

Duh! Why don't you discuss it with the lady that had the problem? Might be a way to improve customer relations, in addition to learning the actual problem, hers or yours.

Re: 63-66 Repro Inside Mirror Support Question?

I installed a repo mirror support and repo mirror on my 63. I did have a problem with the mirror not staying in position well. Every time I hit a bump in the road the mirror would fall. I just couldn't get the adjusting screw and tighter.

          Bob -

Did you install the little formed sheet metal bushing in the hole in the mirror arm before inserting the mirror in the support? If this tiny part is left out, the result will be as you described.

I installed the mirror a couple of years ago. But I don't recall a bushing coming with the parts.

This was not a repro mirror

and there was no claim that it would not stay adjusted.

I must have missed the part that said you had discussed the problem with her. It sounded like you were trying to figure out what was wrong without talking to her. I have an original 63 and I have used repro mirror brackets in the past. I have no idea of any were you produst or not. Anyway, I have never had a problem with them not tightening. I'm not familiar with the bushing described, but would it aid the screw turning and thereby allow for a tighter fit?

I have never understood the bushing mystery

I cannot understand the principle upon which that bushing functions. I'm hoping John can provide that answer. I have ruled that bushing out as a factor, because there never was mention of a wobbly mirror head problem and the lady was re-using her old mirror.

I was and am still dumbfounded because she said the yoke was to small or narrow to fit her original mirror's ball stud bracket. But when I measured the repro, it was .001 wider than original, so if anything it would have been slightly easier to slip in. And blueprints do show that as an acceptable tolerance. If she had stated it was too loose, it would have made more sense. However, I even checked the tightness on 4 different GM mirrors.

Re: the mirror was said to be original

Only explanantion or at least one is that she does NOT have an original mirror. As seen on Ebay, many people don't know what they have.
