    Windshield ??

What do I look for to tell if a windsheild is original?
Are there date codes on windshields?

    Thank you,
    Brandon

    Re: Windshield ??

What is the year of the car? Yes, most corvette that I know about had a date code description. It is hard to tell original from repro. If it is an old car and the glass is real nice (windshield) than it has probably been replaced. I have heard that repro glass was slightly thinner than original. They may have started to correct that. The other thing is that the lettering may not have the correct shape for the year it is being used on. Camero people found this out some time ago and talked about it on their boards. I suspected it was the same issue for corvette also. Terry

      Re: Windshield ??

      Terry,
Thank you. I have a "72. I have looked a a few vettes around my vintage and they all seem to have differen wording on the windshield. What logo or wording would I be looking for?

Lastly, is the point deduction worth the hassle of looking for, finding, paying for and shipping a " correct windshield?

      Regards,
      Brandon

        Re: Windshield ??

If you have a nice car and you can find an original windshield in good shape, I would go for it. I can clean them up most of the time and make them work. If they are delaminating, forget it.

I am not familiar with 72 corvette. But I am fairly certain it should say "LOF" for Libby Owens Ford company. I suspect that by 1972 front windshields on corvette were standard tinted. The tinted glass that I am familiar with says either "Soft-Ray" or "Easy Eye" on them. There will be a date code on it also, something like XN, NN, etc. The first letter tells the month and the second letter tells the year. You can usually find all this information in the passenger lower corner of the windshiel. The glass manufacture date should preceed the the build date of the car body. There are other markings on the glass that are somewhat universal identifiers for the position of the glass like windshield vs side door vs rear glass vs right side vs left side. There are markings for tinted and non-tinted, S1 or S2 as I recall. You should find that code about half way up on the passenger side near the edge of the glass. I stand to be corrected on any of this stuff though. I sort of become an expert on what ever I happen to be working on at the time and lately I have not been doing any glass. I never retain the infor for very long, just the genralalities. I have researched it in the past though and I am familiar with 68 mostly. Original glass is hard to find but it is out there. Hen's teeth! Hope this helps, Terry

Thank you much and here is what I found.

          Terry,
For someone who doesn't retain info for long you sure seem right on to me. I just ran out to the car and looked at the window. I believe mine is original and here is the info I found. This is based on the information you provided and I thank you very much.

Half way up the windo I have the S1 with a down arrow followed by and A.

The bottom corner I have the following

          Shaded

          E-Z-Eye

Saftey LOF Float .... The LOF is in a box

ASF YJ .... Some of the letters are hard to read

          Laminated

          DOT 15 M24

          Best regards and thank you.

Yup, l@@ks good to me also. DOT is department of transportation. You probably already knew that. I believe the 15 M24 probably identifies it as corvette front windshield.

I usually feel better when the news is so good. Best regards, Terry

Yes it is a rare treat for me to get such news. I find myself forever fixing Bubba's handy work and he sure had his hands over most of the car.

Sometimes I like Bubba....im most cases he made it real easy to tell the original from the abortion repair job.

                Take care, Terry

Original 72 windshields wre installed with a cloth T-shirt like material you can see through the glass from the outside. If I see this I know it is original and never removed. If the letters YJ are the date code it is not correct date for a 72.

                    Lyle,
Hope all is well. These letters were difficult to read. I am not at all sure about the Y. The J looks right but then again...... 30 yr old window and poor lighting....

                    What letter sould they be.

                        YJ is Oct.78

If it is JY that is May 72 and could be on a 72. Make sure you read from the side the wording is correct. Puting a black paper on the other side of the window sometimes makes the letters stand out better. The second letter needs to be N or Y.
