    1972 LT-1 Starter Solenoid

    Dear Sir:

I seem to be missing my starter solneoid on my car.

    1. How does this system work?

    2. Does anyone have a part # and or a place I could get one

    Steve-----

Basically, on a Chevrolet, the starter solenoid is an electro-mechanical device that delivers the high electrical energy necessary to engage and operate the starter motor on the signal of a low electrical energy "impulse" from the ignition switch. For a further description of the system, I would suggest that you consult an automotive "encyclopedia" or basic automotive electrical systems manual. These references will cover the systems in much greater detail.

As far as your starter solenoid goes, your car was originally equipped with solenoid GM #1114356. This part was discontinued years ago and is currently replaced by GM #1114458, which is similarly configured. Any GM or Delco dealer can sell you this part for $35, or less.

      Joe:

I think I have given you some confusing information! I was referring to the starting solenoid that mounts on the carb on the driver side. The reason I use the term "STARTING SOLENOID" because that is the way they refer to it in dobbins page 211 TOP PICTURE. So, I guess I made a mistake. The same information would apply that I needed before.

        Steve----

That's different! I don't know why Dobbins refers to this as a "starting solenoid"; irrespective of whether there is any "applicability" for the term it sure would create a problem with respect to confusion with the other part that I previously described. In any event, the "official" GM-terminology for this part is "carburetor idle control solenoid".

To briefly respond to your first question, the purpose for this part is to influence idle speed for the purpose of emissions control based upon an electrical signal supplied to the solenoid and controlled by the car's other emissions control components. These solenoids were also used on some A/C-equipped cars to compensate for idle speed when the A/C compressor engaged.

The solenoid originally used on your Holley-equipped LT-1 was GM #6273914. Later, this became GM #1997409, then GM #1997470. Currently, the SERVICE part which replaces the last part number is GM #17111376 which is still available and GM-lists for $64.70. However, although this part should be entirely FUNCTIONAL for your application, its CONFIGURATION may well be considerably different than the originals. You may be able to obtain an originally configured part, if that is your desire, from Sal Carbone.

My car is a none air car, Should it still have this solenoid?

Yes, all 1972 Corvettes had it.
