My 67 vert likes to pop the rear conv. top latches when I'm driving. First one will go and shortly after the other. I've visually inspected the mechanisms and I find nothing wrong. The pins are homing in the latch properly viewed from inside the car. It seems to have gotten worse since I cleaned and lubed the latch and also in colder weather. Yesterday it was 59 degrees here in WI so I took the car for a drive. It happened several times at highway speed so I just put the top down where it belongs anyway . Any hints as to what might be wrong and how to correct it would be appreciated.
Usually the result of either wear on the latches/catches OR not having the latches properly centered in the catch opening. Screws hold the latches to the convertible rear bow via enlongated adjustment holes. A little movement of the latch can make a big difference in how good a 'bite' you get inside the deck lid catch!
Wayne, I'm not sure if I can describe this well enough to make sense, but I had a similar problem with only one latch. It drove me nuts until I finally pulled both latches and compared them. It seemed that the malfunctioning latch was assembled wrong! I had to push out a roll pin and reposition the spring so it was pushing the thumb (or release) lever tightly toward the rear of the car. This lever pushes a "dog" into the teeth on the latching pin. Therefore, if your thumb levers are rather loose and do not want to be pushing rearward, you may have an assembly problem like I had.
Both my thumb levers are pushed tight toward the front of the car no matter if the top is latched or unlatched. Is this backwards from what they should be. I have to push the thumb levers toward the rear of the car to unlatch the top.
Your latches seem to be assembled properly. My properly working latches are functioning like yours. My memory was faulty in my previous response, they should push toward the front not rhe rear but must be snug not loose like the misassembled latch I had. Sorry about the confusion.
