    68 Battery Door seal

For 1968 ther seal around the battery door in the rear storage compartment is a straight sponge rubber type seal. My question is where do the two ends meet; in the front, rear, or side (which side)?

I just finished installing the carpet and the rear compartment storage frame and doors and want to get this right.

Also, does anyone know where to obtain the HEAVY foil backed fiberglass insulation that was used in the battery box and maybe also in the box that houses the jack?
    Thanks in advance.
(I am getting real close to finishing this baby, and I am happy.)

I'm not sure that there was a "definitive" point where the ends of the battery door seal joined. However, the joint on my 69 was in the center, rear. I feel pretty confident that this was probably a typical location for 1968, too.

I'm not familiar with any foil covered, fiberglass insulation used in the battery box (or, the jack storage area) of a 1968-69. I know, for sure, that my 69 never had any such insulation.

The use of the insulation started about S/N 9300. Like Joe said we do not believe usage continued into 1969. You might check with Dr. Rebuild to see if he has the insulation.

Can't look until late tonight Kurt, but my original owner 68 still has the original seal for the battery box lid. Still have the aluminum backing insulation for the jack storage compartment in place and some of the aluminum backing insulation for the battery compartment somewhere. Do not know where you could purchase it today.

          Jim,
Where do you live and can you leave your garage unlocked so I can liberate your insulation for the storage and battery compartment. Just kidding of course,,,,

Originally, the seal ends were located on the back side of the door opening, next to the hinge assembly (likeb Joe says). They were not always perfectly in the middle however...anywhere along the back side will be correct based on what I have seen of originals (what was left of originals).

All the suppliers carry the insulation. I suspect one person makes it and they all sell it. Let me know if you need instructions because it was a technical service bulletin type item and it describes the installation for those cars that did not have it installed at the factory. Terry

                Terry,
Are we talking about the insulation that goes in the battery box and the jack box behind the seats, because I have not seen it in the catalogs? Maybe I missed it. I don't want the home depot foil backed insulation you use in your home, I need the real heavy tin foil stuff with fiberglass attached. I still have a few ripped pieces of my original stuff and I went to several heating and airconditioner supply houses and they didn't have anything as heavy as what GM used originally. I want the heavy stuff. E-mail me with suppliers you know of that carry this stuff.
                Thanks
                Kurt

Good to excellent reproduction is out there. I think Ecklers, Zips, CCentral, Dr Rebuild it, Paragon, all have it. Yup, we are talking about the same thing. Order me some and send it my way Terry

Kurt the seal for the battery storage compartment on my 68 has the ends of the seal meeting at about the middle of rear of of the compartment.

Jim, would it be possible for you to tell me how large the rivet heads are on the front lower valance of your car. They are the rivets that suport the lower grill brackets. Much thanks, Terry

No hurry Jim. I appreciate your help. You have come through with a lot of stuff for me. I will have to name a part of my car after you or something for all the tid-bits of information you keep getting me from your car.

                          Really appreciate it. Terry

Terry the rivets are about 1/2 in diameter and flat on my lower valance. From one edge of one rivet to edge of the other rivet the distance is about 1 1/2 inches.
