If an A/C compressor is new, not charged w/no oil - will you damage it if you run the engine without engaging the compressor "clutch"??? TIA, Dennis

Re: Dumb Question 101 - A/C Compressor
Nope, won't hurt it at all. All you are doing is spinning the pulley on a sealed front bearing and are not turning anything inside the compressor at all.

Re: Thanks John, Will sleep like a baby tonight...
Dennis, some "rebuilders" charge the compressor with oil as part of the rebuild. I know the boys in Tampa did that for the two they rebuilt for me (65 & 72) they put a full system oil fill in the compressor so you don't have to add it as part of the freon fill.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: Thanks Bill... This is a new GM item - No oil.
Dennis,
Don't feel like the only procrastinator in the crowd. I still have not charged the A/C compressor in my 59 resto-rod, and it has been done done for months! There really little use for an A/C unit in a 59 convertible, but I put one in because that is what people expect, and I may want to sell it some day. I will probably get around to charging it before next summer.
