    Re: octane boost

None of them do any good, they're loaded with alcohol or kerosene, and they'll eat the plating off the inside of your float bowls.

      Re: octane boost

John, the fuel octane booster liquids should be avoided for a couple of other reasons, also. Unless you are running contemporary fuel injection rubber fuel hoses, the octane booster will eat the hoses from the inside out. It will rear its ugly head as a black residue throughout your carb. Don't ask how I know. Also, if you're using the black nitrile floats in a carburetor, it will eat them too and cause them to soak up fuel and go heavy. Your carb will go sick very fast.

        Re: octane boost

I am so glad to see this post.. My '66 Chevelle is running 11:1 compression, and the only fuel that works in it is 98 octane which they sell down by Cecil Dragway. Yes, it's expensive, but I'd heard things in the past about octane booster saying it did not work, but could not remember what it was..

The rednecks that live around me all use it and say I'm crazy for not putting it in my car. I'll be sure to stop by when they have to replace their hoses and carbs.. 8^]

Jim , I have used lead tetraethyl "supreme 130" for years in my 11:1 With noticeable results. It is advertised in Driveline. 1 quart in 15 gal fill up will result in 98 oct. Don

            Hi John,
I live in Scottsdale where I can get 111 octaine for my 58 (6.50)a gallon OUCH ! & that is all I put in my car. When I take a little trip & get down to between 1/4 & 1/2 a tank, I will just mix with regular hi test. If I should be going for a really long cruise,( not often) I will bring a 2 gallon can of the 111 & mix some in for the ride home. Also if you live near a small airport, you may be able to get your gas can filled.I know here in AZ the guys told me they are always filling gas cans for people who use it for Small aircraft & also those radio controlled vehicles. I hope this helps.
            Good luck,
            Deb

              Re: octane boost

All the '58 engines are 9.5:1 except the 283/290, and even it should operate without significant detonation on pump premium.

You only need higher octane if your engine detonates on pump premium and often slight detonation can be solved with a little spark advance map fiddling.

                Re: octane boost

My feeling is there are octane boosters and then there are tetra-ethyl lead additives that also act as an octane booster. I only use the tetra-ethyl lead additive since it is very useful as a lubricant on valves and other parts in my fuel injected 11.25:1 C2 engine. Never had any detonation unless I don't use it with unleaded premium.

I have a 69 L-46 350/350 with 11:00-1 comp. and run premium pump gas with no problem at all.In my opinion there is a whole lot of money being wasted on octane boosters. If you run good quality fuel and keep it fresh you should be O.K. If you store the car put in some Sta-Bil if you like, but I even question that unless it is going to be quite a long time.JMHO. Tom
