'67 L-79 twin groove engine pulley....

My engine has no PS, no PB, no A/C, no A.I.R.....What is the arrangement of the two belts on these double groove pulley's? There is a short belt which connects only the crank pulley and the water pump, which I understand is a redundant belt to keep the pump running in the event of an alternator fan belt failure.

Then there is the alternator belt which connects only the crank pulley and the alternator pulley. My question is which belt is located closest to the engine? I'm inclined to think the short belt is the one and the alternator belt is the furthest out from the engine.

The Judging Manual does not seem to address this item, Noland Adams Vol II shows the short belt closest to the engine. The AIM shows the belt configurations on page G-167, but they show every engine option EXCEPT the L-79. I have seen pictures of similar L-79's with the belts reversed. Anyone know for sure or have a picture? I'm looking at this from a Judging perspective, because you probably would get a hit if the Judges think otherwise. Here is a picture of an L-79 like I'm talking about with the alternator belt on the INSIDE, closest to the engine. This particular car is a 3 time Top Flite and Duntov winner. Thanks in advance. PT

Patrick - I'm original owner '67 L-79 with exactly the same no air, no p/s, no p/b, no A.I.R set-up like yours.

Rear groove (belt) goes to alternator/crank/water pump. The forward groove(belt, closest to rad) drives the short water pump to crank.

If you want, I can send pix.

The belt must align with the alternator, waterpump, and crank so if the alternator pulley dictates a groove then so be it. I know there are various alternator pulley thicknesses that determine this position

Thanks to everyone for the information. I have a one piece pulley/fan with a gray phosphate finsh, which I believe is the correct pulley. The pulleys for cars with options are two piece and are "stepped up" to stick out an extra groove for belts for P/S, etc. Looks like I'll have to switch them around. PT

Patrick - This L79 no option belt topic has gone round and round. The good news is Tom's belt configuration is the one that you should have on the '66 and '67 L79 w/ no belt driven options. Groove #1 closest to the engine block is the alternator, water pump, and crank pulley belt. Groove #2 is the "idler" belt that goes to the water pump and crank pulley.

Noland Adam's book shows a picture (page 359) of a 1966 L79 engine w/ no belt options (has U69 Radio) being lowered in to a chassis at St. Louis and the idler belt is in place and you can make out that it's in the outer groove (#2 groove) of the pulleys. Page 421 shows a couple of pictures of a 1967 L79 engine w/ no belt driven options (has U69 Radio) and you can see that the idler belt is again in the outer most groove (#2 groove).

Also, Long Island's catalog, Section #59 Belts, shows a diagram of the belt routings for the '66-'67 327 w/ idler belt.

Peter, here is the pulley I have. I got it from LICS and checked the catalog over and over to make sure it was the right one. All I have to do now is move it to the back groove, next to the engine. PT
